Anton Yelchin was born in Russia. At 6 months old his parents moved to the United States. Anton is the son of famed figure skaters Victor and Irina. As a young child Anton was trained as a skater, but he was not satisfied. "I didn't understand the point of skating around in a circle," he says. "I wasn't good at it either."

Anton found his calling in 1998 when a friend suggested he try acting lessons. He quickly got some roles in commercials and in 1999 scored a minor movie role in A Man Is Mostly Water (2000). Next Anton Yelchin was featured in the 2000 TV movie Geppetto (2000), along with dozens of other young actors. He also starred as Milo in Delivering Milo (2000) and garnered several other minor roles, including a guest-starring role in an episode of ER (2000). In 2001 Anton Yelchin starred as Dimitri Starodubov in the thriller Along Came a Spider with Morgan Freeman. But Anton Yelchin's best roles were still to come.

Anton Yelchin was the clear choice to play Bobby Garfield opposite Oscar winner Sir Anthony Hopkins as Ted Brautigan in the critically acclaimed Hearts in Atlantis (2001). Director Scott Hicks commented, "Anton appears not to be acting . . . It just comes out of his eyes." Hopkins was equally impressed, not only by young Anton's skill before the camera, but also by his gentle demeanor and personality. What did Anton have to say about working with Anthony Hopkins? "When I first met (Hopkins) I was so nervous, my eye kept twitching. But then I calmed down because he was so nice."

The following year Anton got a pivotal role in Steven Spielberg's science-fiction TV mini-series, Taken (2002), playing Jacob Clarke as a child. The SHOWTIME original series, HUFF, came calling on November 7, 2004. Anton Yelchin played the doctor's 14-year-old son. He got the opportunity of a lifetime to perform with Robin Williams in House of D in 2004. Next was Fierce People (2005).

Over the course of his short acting career, Anton played roles in more than twenty feature films and television productions. He received the role of a lifetime taking over the role of Pavel Chekov in the latest installment of the 'Star Trek' franchise, Star Trek (2009), and look for him in Terminator Salvation (2009).

Outside of his acting profession, Anton Yelchin loves reading, he is also fond of playing chess. He writes music and performs with a band where he also plays piano and guitar.

Anton lived in Los Angeles, California, until his death on the evening of June 19, 2016, outside his LA home, when his parked Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backward on his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick pillar and security fence. This was due to badly designed shifter that indicated park when it was in neutral. This death, along with reports of other near-misses, resulted in a recall of that model. (The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that rolled into him was part of a 2016 recall for that exact same issue. Incredibly, the recall notice was mailed to Yelchin seven days after his untimely death.)

Anton suffered from Cystic Fibrosis, a birth defect that gave him life-long breathing issues.

The producers of Star Trek said that the role of Pavel Chekov would not be recast and the character would be written out of any following movies. Star Trek Beyond (2016) was dedicated to his memory.

In October 2017, a bronze statue of Anton Yelchin was erected at his grave in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Celebrities present at the unveiling ceremony included Jennifer Lawrence, Zoe Saldana, J.J. Abrams, Emile Hirsch, Demi Moore, Jon Voight, Drake Doremus, and Jeremy Saulnier.
